No default photo in Fedora
« on: January 10, 2010, 04:15:22 AM »
Hi,

this 'bug' is due to Thunderbird itself, I guess, but it is related to Contact Photos, so you may want to investigate it.
Apparently, in Fedora 12 (KDE or Gnome, two different computers checked), the default photo in the Address Book is missing. The 'Generic Photo' field has still 'Default' (and no other choices are present), but the picture is missing.
Therefore, when you receive a mail from a sender without a photo, Contact Photo does not even create a box on the left, but only a small line.

That is probably a bug in Thunderbird or Fedora's Thunderbird package, but I am definitely interested since I worked on adding photos to Thunderbird itself.  Now that I have some bandwidth to spare I'll try to download and install Fedora in a VM and check it out.

How did you install Thunderbird (through yum or by downloading it off of mozillamessaging.org)?

I have the following in FC12 under VMware:

Code: [Select]
Name       : thunderbird
Arch       : i686
Version    : 3.0.1
Release    : 1.fc12
Size       : 49 M
Repo       : installed
From repo  : updates
Summary    : Mozilla Thunderbird mail/newsgroup client
URL        : http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/
License    : MPLv1.1 or GPLv2+ or LGPLv2+
Description: Mozilla Thunderbird is a standalone mail and newsgroup client.

With TB 3.0.1 I can see the default contact photo in the Address Book and in the message header with Gravatars disabled.

Could you try updating to 3.0.1 and see if you still have the problem?

Josh

I have updated Thunderbird some days ago.
Same version as yours:

Installed Packages
Name       : thunderbird
Arch       : i686
Version    : 3.0.1
Release    : 1.fc12
Size       : 49 M
Repo       : installed
From repo  : updates
Summary    : Mozilla Thunderbird mail/newsgroup client
URL        : http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/
License    : MPLv1.1 or GPLv2+ or LGPLv2+
Description: Mozilla Thunderbird is a standalone mail and newsgroup client.

Still no default photo neither in the Address Book nor in the message header.
Do you know where the file is actually located?
Maybe I'm missing it for some strange reason, and knowing where it is could help.

Thanks,

Stefano

In Gentoo the file would be in:
/opt/thunderbird/chrome  If it isn't there let me know and I can look in my virtual machine with Fedora.
Open or extract the archive classic.jar then go to skin/classic/messenger/addressbook/icons/.  It should have a file named contact-generic.png.

The problem is with the Noia theme. Using the default one, I have the default photo in the address book (and in the message header).
It seems that the Noia theme is missing this icon. I can contact the authors to let them know. Sorry to bother you for that.

In any case, it may interest you that I don't have the contact-generic.png in my computer. It is only contained in the classic.jar file you mentioned, but the file itself is not present in any other location. Still, as I told you, I see the photo in the address book now that I use the default theme.

Thanks,

Stefano

That makes sense, I should've asked about themes.

It is used from the jar file, so it doesn't need to be located anywhere else (other than themes).

Thanks for the update!
