How to run the System File Checker (SFC)

What is SFC?

The System File Checker, or SFC, is a tool built into XP that scans important system files for corruption and repairs them if necessary.

How do I use it?

You may need an XP CD if it prompts you for one. Follow these steps to run SFC.

1. Open the Start menu and click Run
2. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter to begin
   
3. Once the dialog disappears it is finished
